A Chrome extension that only hides intrusive full-screen ads

Privacy Policy

Effective date: Last updated:

XLess is a Chrome extension that removes screen-covering ads.

Information and purpose

  • Settings, including enabled ad types, excluded sites and custom CSS rules, are stored to control ad removal.
  • When logging is enabled, XLess stores the hostname, page title, URL without its query string or fragment, time, ad type and matching rule, counts by type and site, and rule suggestions. These records help you inspect removals, exclude sites and create rules.
  • If you turn on "Debug log" in Settings (off by default), XLess stores the details of up to the latest 1,000 decisions: the page's hostname and URL without its query string or fragment; a description of each removed element (tag name, id, class, size, position, the source of any iframe inside it, and its first 40 characters of text); the destination URLs of blocked and allowed actions and the URLs of muted videos (query parameter names only); a short name of the clicked element; the URL of the script that triggered the action; and the time. It is used to investigate false positives and missed ads, and never leaves your device unless you copy and share it yourself.
  • Per-tab removal counts are held temporarily and cleared when the browser closes.
  • Page elements and display state are inspected locally to detect ads and restore scrolling and interaction. Page content is not sent to the developer.

Storage and transmission

Data is stored in Chrome's chrome.storage on your device. Ad detection and log processing happen locally. The developer operates no server receiving your browsing data. The extension does not send, share or sell its records to third parties. It contains no analytics or advertising code.

Custom CSS that you add or import may reference external URLs and cause requests to those destinations. Only use rules you trust. Site icons are displayed using Chrome's favicon feature.

Your choices

  • Disable "Keep a log" in Settings to stop retaining site-related records and suggestions. The debug log is not kept either.
  • Clear records and the debug log from the Log page. You can turn off "Debug log" in Settings at any time.
  • Uninstall the extension to remove stored data.
  • The recent removal log is limited to the latest 300 entries. Aggregated counts and settings remain until cleared, reset or uninstalled.

The extension's use of information adheres to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
