A Chrome extension that only hides intrusive full-screen ads

Release Notes

The main changes in each version of XLess, newest first.

Version 0.1.3

New

  • Click hijacking (pop-ups and new tabs): A new ad type that stops scripts from opening ad tabs or windows when you click anywhere on the page. It’s on by default and brings the total to 18 ad types.
  • Invisible layers: When an ad uses an invisible layer to steal your clicks, XLess removes the layer so whatever you clicked responds as expected.
  • Debug log: Turn on “Debug log” in Settings (off by default) to keep what was removed or stopped, and why, on your device. You can view and copy it on the Log page to report false positives or missed ads.

Improved

  • Updated the privacy policy to describe what the debug log keeps on your device and how Incognito pages are handled.

Version 0.1.2

The first public release.

Highlights

  • Hides only intrusive full-screen ads: Handles 17 ad types, including Google full-screen ads (Vignettes and Ad Manager interstitials), “watch an ad to earn a reward” dialogs, back-button hijacking, full-screen ads from Japanese ad networks, and ad-blocker warnings that cover articles.
  • Regular ads stay: In-page ads aren’t removed. Only sudden audio and flashing animations are toned down by default.
  • Repairs side effects: Restores locked scrolling, unresponsive clicks and blurred text left behind by removed ads.
  • Manual tools: Remove anything that slips through with the element picker, the right-click menu or the emergency shortcut (Alt+Shift+X).
  • Per-site control: Exclude sites, and add per-site custom rules written as CSS selectors.
  • English and Japanese: The interface follows your Chrome display language.
